When someone mentions the Celtic Classic Highland Games, you might wonder, “What in the world is it?” The first thing that might pop into your mind is a Celtic musical festival or dance competition. That’s close but not quite. Don’t worry, because we here at Sayre Mansion are here to give you a primer to prepare for your visit to the 2014 Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival.
This September 26th through 28th, the streets of the charming town of Bethlehem where the Sayre Mansion is located, will be filled with people from all over the world, coming together to celebrate all things Celtic! This event has blossomed into one of the largest Highland Games and Festivals in North America, with over 250,000 visitors annually. But this event is not the only thing happening in Bethlehem. The organization has expanded into year round programs, including community outreach events in area school districts, religious institutions, local theaters, and colleges throughout the Lehigh Valley.
This year is the 27th Annual Celtic Classic presented by Celtic Cultural Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to persevering and promoting the Celtic heritage through musical performances and traditional competitions in athletics, piping and dance. The Celtic Classic has 4 stages of continuous entertainment featuring international, regional, and national artists. From the Celtic Classic Invitational Pipe Band Competition to Haggis Bowl Competition, the Celtic Classic is full of excitement and culture.
The Haggis Bowl Contest is a favorite among festivalgoers. The rules for the haggis competition are simple. The person competing has to eat 1 pound of haggis and the fastest to finish wins the contest. With competitors traveling from as far away as Alaska for the honor of holding the title of “Celtic Classic Haggis Eating Champion”, this event is taken very seriously among locals and guests.
One thing that you don’t want to miss out on is the 17th Annual Celtic Classic Fiddle Competition. The Kids Craft Tent, located in Celtic Heritage hollow, offers crafter through out the entire event. Kids will delight over the creative things they will make while celebrating the Celtic heritage of the area. From fluffy sheep magnets to Celtic Crowns, the kids won’t want to leave.
Always a sellout, the Whiskey tasting returns yet again to the Celtic Classic Highland Games. Join in on an interesting and informative tasting session featuring Irish whisky from 2 gingers, Connemara, Kilbeggan, Tyrconnell, and Greenore. Plus, guest will also receive a crystal whisky glass from Scottish crystal maker Glencairn Crystal. With an introduction to the history of whisky, the distilling process and much more, guests are sure to have a fantastic time at this event.
