Strawberry AcresThe air is cooling and the leaves on the trees are beginning to change from green to shades of orange, red, yellow, and gold.  It can only mean one thing: fall is approaching once more, and that means that new fruit crops will be ready to pick! A perfect autumn pastime in the Lehigh Valley is picking your own fruits at one of the farms in the area.  One of our favorite places to pick fruit is Strawberry Acres in nearby Coplay, PA. Coplay is just about 20 minutes away from our Bethlehem boutique hotel, making a trip to Strawberry Acres the ideal way to spend a day enjoying the fall air during your stay at the Sayre Mansion.  With a variety of fruit ready to be picked depending on season as well as a market and other activities, a day at Strawberry Acres is a fall must.

About Strawberry Acres

Strawberry Acres is a working farm that has been continually worked since 1820.  The stone home originally built on the property is still in use today! The farm was originally formed on 100 acres but land was added through the years, including an addition of 75 acres sometime in the 1960s.  The pick-your-own fruits started with strawberries (hence the name of the farm) and extended to other fruit trees in an attempt to soften the blow of losing about half of their crops to a storm in the 1980s. Today Strawberry acres is third largest pick-your-own farm in the state of Pennsylvania.

Picking Fruit at Strawberry Acres

Depending on the season in which you visit Strawberry Acres, there is a variety of delectable fruits to pick.  Or, if you want to try some of the homegrown fruits, you can buy it ready-picked at the Strawberry Acres Farm Market. The fruits you can pick or buy at strawberry acres are:

  • Strawberries
  • Cherries: Emperor Francis, Cavalier Hedelfingen
  • Peaches: Red Haven, Glo Haven, Loring, Suncrest, Redskin, Crest Haven
  • Apples: Royal Gala, Macintosh, Honeycrisp, Jonagold, Golden Delicious, Idared, Mutsu, Melrose, Fuji
  • Pears: Bartlett, Bosc, Anjou
  • Pumpkins & Gourds

Farm Market, Bakery, and Activities at Strawberry Acres

In addition to the pick-your-own action in the orchards on Strawberry Acres, there are more activities you should consider.  Head to the Farm Market and Bakery to get fresh baked goods, pre-picked fruit, fruit preserves and butters, and seasonal specialties like delicious cider in the fall.   There is also a variety of delicious hot food to enjoy at the Farm Market like hoagies and hot dogs as well as beverages and the delicious baked goods (dumplings, pies, muffins etc.).

The farm is also home to Barnyard Buddies from August through October, where you can encounter farm animals and get in touch with another part of farm life.  Pony rides, hayrides, games, and the turbo tube slide down the hillside are other popular activities at Strawberry Acres.

Staying Near Strawberry Acres

Because our Bethlehem boutique hotel is just about 20 minutes away from the Strawberry Acres farm in Coplay, you can enjoy both the idyllic countryside atmosphere while picking and return to the Sayre Mansion for elegant accommodations and luxurious amenities.  Located in the heart of downtown Bethlehem, we’re always near the action – whether that’s one of our amazing festivals, a show at the Sands Event Center, or just great shopping and dining.  There’s always something happening in Bethlehem and in the greater Lehigh Valley area, so it’s the ideal destination year-round.  And whenever you decide to visit, Strawberry Acres will have some sweet delicious fruit for you to harvest and take home!

Hawk Mountain SanctuaryThe charming town of Bethlehem, PA has so much to offer in the way of entertainment, culture, and a great small-town atmosphere.  However this isn’t all that the Lehigh Valley has going for it.  Here at Sayre Mansion, we love sharing our favorite activities and attractions with guests. There are plenty of activities for those more inclined to enjoy the outdoors as well. In nearby Kempton, PA the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is home to a variety of  birds of prey and is dedicated to protecting and conserving these important species. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary offers visitors the chance to get up close to nature with wildlife viewing stations, hiking trails, and exhibits that take a deeper look at the habitats of the birds. If you’re a birder or just a outdoor enthusiast, then Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is worth a visit.

History and Raptor Conservation at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary was the first raptor refuge in the United States and was founded in during the Great Depression in 1934 when there was a movement to eradicate predatory wildlife from the area. The sanctuary includes 1400 acres and sees a large number of falcons, hawks, kestrels, and eagles due to the migratory patterns of the birds. The area has seen over 265 species since opening, with 65 of those regularly nesting, and approximately 150 appearing each year. The geography of the sanctuary features several peaks and ridges that offer amazing views of the Appalachian mountains and trail.

The Visitor Center at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary

Your trip to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary will begin at the Visitor Center.  There you can pay admission to the trails, browse the selection of books an nature gifts, and get to know birds of prey better through various exhibits, including a glimpse into their habitat. The Visitor Center is also host to special programs and events.  It’s also a great place to view the wildlife that frequent the sanctuary, with viewing windows that provide views of the bird feeding areas. You may also want to get a sneak peak of the birds you can see at the sanctuary, as there are 16 raptor species represented by life-size wooden carvings.

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Hiking Trails

Along with opportunities to learn about raptors, their habitats, and conservation, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary has hiking trails.  Observe the birds of prey and other wildlife from the trails, as well as indigenous flora. There are five trails of varying difficulty: South Lookout Trail, Lookout Trail, River of Rocks Trail, Skyline Trail, Golden Eagle Trails, and the Pinnacle Trail.  The Lookout Trail is the most accessible and easy of the trails, while the Golden Eagle presents a challenge and the Pinnacle Trail connects to the famed Appalachian Trail.

After a day of spotting birds and hiking the trails at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, our Bethlehem boutique hotel is the ideal place to come back and relax. The Sayre Mansion features classic and elegant furnishings while providing outstanding amenities and service.  Our rooms are all uniquely appointed with luxurious and comfortable furniture and decor.  No matter what you decided to do in the Lehigh Valley, a stay at the Sayre Mansion will make the trip extra special.

Bethlehem Harvest FestivalOne of the great things about Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is that there is so much going on year-round. From the signature summer celebration that is Musikfest, to the lights of the Christmas City in the winter, there is an event to celebrate most seasons.  In the autumn, one event you must attend if you’re planning a trip to the Sayre Mansion is the Bethlehem Harvest Festival.  If you’re a fan of craft beer, locally made food, great music, and wine, then the Bethlehem Harvest Festival has your name all over it!

Now in its 9th year, the Bethlehem Harvest Festival is presented by the Downtown Bethlehem Association and  has become a tradition for locals and visitors each October.  This year’s event will take place on Saturday, October 11th from 11 am until 6 pm on Main Street and until 8 pm in the Sun Inn Courtyard.  The festival includes great food, wine and soup tastings, a biergarten, live entertainment, and even a pie eating contest.

Bethlehem Harvest Festival Biergarten

A key part of the festival is definitely the Biergarten.  This hub of activity will be the place to find local cuisine, live music, and a variety of beer. If you’re in it for the beer, then you should consider a Beer Passport, which allows you to sample 28 beers on Main Street during the day, and gives you a discount on beer at the Biergarten until closing.

Soup and Wine Tasting

Along with Beer Passports, Wine Passports are also available. Get yours stamped at the wine tastings during the day.  If you’re a soup fan, there will be a soup tasting and contest featuring soups from downtown restaurants.  Try them all and vote for your favorite!

Pie Eating Contest

What would any festival be without a pie eating contest? The Bethlehem Harvest Festival’s pie eating contest gives 10 lucky festival-goers the chance to eat some of the most delicious pie in the Lehigh Valley while competing to see who can finish one off the quickest!  Of course, standard pie eating contest rules apply: no hands and your pie has to be completely gone, naturally!

Music at the Harvest Festival

Live music will keep things hopping throughout the day at the Bethlehem Harvest Festival. Two stages (one in the Biergarten and one on Main Street) will feature local favorites bringing out their best stuff. So bring your dancing shoes, it’s sure to be entertaining!

When planning your visit to the Bethlehem Harvest Festival, a stay at a local Bethlehem boutique hotel will enhance your experience. The Sayre Mansion has elegant yet comfortable guest rooms that will make you feel at home and luxurious amenities that will pamper you.  One of the biggest benefits of staying at Sayre is our location right in the heart of Bethlehem, so no matter when you visit you’ll be close to the action. Plus, our historic property is an integral part of the town’s history, so you can have an authentic Bethlehem experience. And, of course, you can count on a delicious breakfast each morning of your stay, so you can head out to the Harvest Festival fully fueled and ready to fill up that beer passport!

Celtic ClassicWhen someone mentions the Celtic Classic Highland Games, you might wonder, “What in the world is it?” The first thing that might pop into your mind is a Celtic musical festival or dance competition. That’s close but not quite. Don’t worry, because we here at Sayre Mansion are here to give you a primer to prepare for your visit to the 2014 Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival.

This September 26th through 28th, the streets of the charming town of Bethlehem where the Sayre Mansion is located, will be filled with people from all over the world, coming together to celebrate all things Celtic! This event has blossomed into one of the largest Highland Games and Festivals in North America, with over 250,000 visitors annually. But this event is not the only thing happening in Bethlehem. The organization has expanded into year round programs, including community outreach events in area school districts, religious institutions, local theaters, and colleges throughout the Lehigh Valley.

This year is the 27th Annual Celtic Classic presented by Celtic Cultural Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to persevering and promoting the Celtic heritage through musical performances and traditional competitions in athletics, piping and dance. The Celtic Classic has 4 stages of continuous entertainment featuring international, regional, and national artists. From the Celtic Classic Invitational Pipe Band Competition to Haggis Bowl Competition, the Celtic Classic is full of excitement and culture.

The Haggis Bowl Contest is a favorite among festivalgoers. The rules for the haggis competition are simple. The person competing has to eat 1 pound of haggis and the fastest to finish wins the contest. With competitors traveling from as far away as Alaska for the honor of holding the title of “Celtic Classic Haggis Eating Champion”, this event is taken very seriously among locals and guests.

One thing that you don’t want to miss out on is the 17th Annual Celtic Classic Fiddle Competition. The Kids Craft Tent, located in Celtic Heritage hollow, offers crafter through out the entire event. Kids will delight over the creative things they will make while celebrating the Celtic heritage of the area. From fluffy sheep magnets to Celtic Crowns, the kids won’t want to leave.

Always a sellout, the Whiskey tasting returns yet again to the Celtic Classic Highland Games. Join in on an interesting and informative tasting session featuring Irish whisky from 2 gingers, Connemara, Kilbeggan, Tyrconnell, and Greenore. Plus, guest will also receive a crystal whisky glass from Scottish crystal maker Glencairn Crystal. With an introduction to the history of whisky, the distilling process and much more, guests are sure to have a fantastic time at this event.

When you’re making plans to attend the 2014 Celtic Classic Highland Games, don’t forget to book your stay at the Sayre Mansion. Our rooms and suites have timeless elegance and modern conveniences. A full breakfast each morning is included in your stay as well, so you’ll have the fuel to take on Celtic Classic Highland Games. Allentown FairDo you want to spend a week listening to fantastic live music by popular artist? How does munching on your favorite fair foods while enjoying the music sound? Do you love the thrill you get when on a fair ride? Well, if all that is what you are looking for, start planning your trip to an event packed full of excitement and more! The Allentown Fair is one of the greatest events of the summer in the Lehigh Valley. From a petting zoo to thrilling rides, there is something for everyone at the Allentown Fair! Come stay with us at Sayre Mansion and partake in all the festivities. Here are a few things to know about the Allentown Fair.

In October of 1852, the Lehigh County Agricultural Society held the first fair on Livingston’s Lawn. After the successful fair, the Society purchased a larger plot of land. In 1863, there was no Fair due to the Civil War; however, the fairgrounds were used as a staging site for the 176th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers. The Fair resumed in 1863. Later on in the 1880’s, the Allentown Fair grew so much that the Society purchased a larger plot of land! One of the primary features of the new location was the half-mile racetrack, with grandstands capable of seating 2,500 people! The fair was renamed the Great Allentown Fair with the opening of the new fairgrounds.

In the 1960’s, the Allentown Fair began holding musical concerts and performances during the already fun filled week! This drew even more people to the fair! Roy Rogers and Lawrence Welk appeared at the fair during the 1960’s, along with Johnny Carson.

To this day, the Allentown Fair offers many fantastic attractions. On August 26th, the fair will open its gates until September 1st. The Grandstand, a large outdoor stage, is where the fair’s big-name musicians perform. This year, musicians including Pitbull, Mötley Crüe with special guest Alice Copper, Lady Antebellum, Tim McGraw, Hunter Hayes, and more will be performing at the Grandstand. Don’t miss out on all the fantastic artists. Click here, to find out what days they will be performing.

One show that children and adults will love is the Elephant Encounter. Sponsored by Diefenderfer Electric & Telecommunications, this educational show features Asian elephant Cora and her beautiful African counterpart Shannon. The show will enthrall you and is performed 3 times daily. Another fantastic activity to experience is the 4-H Petting Zoo. A favorite spot for all fairgoers, a visit to the petting zoo is a must. Catch chicks hatching and a host of baby farm animals learning to walk, while wandering through the petting zoo!

A fair is not complete without a midway. The Allentown Fair has a beautiful midway thrilling rides, exciting games, and concessions. Fairgoers can purchase the all day ride wristbands at the gate or in advance. Click here to purchase tickets in advance. The fair also offers individual ride tickets. It costs 5 dollars for 4 tickets.

Less than 20 minutes away from the Sayre Mansion, the Allentown Fair is an event filled with culture and fun! Crystal Cave PAThe state of Pennsylvania is full of natural beauty and interesting sites to visit. The different regions of the state offer a variety scenic vistas and points of interest. One place you need to make time for during your time at the Sayre Mansion is Crystal Cave PA  in nearby Kutztown. The cave is a popular spot especially if you’re interested in geology, some of the rock formations are half a million years old and are truly something to behold. Crystal Cave PA has underground tours and other attractions for you to enjoy.

Crystal Cave PA History

Located in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, Crystal Cave was found by Gideon Merkel and John Gehret and I has an interesting history. It was named for the sparkling crystalline deposits formed on the ceiling and walls. Crystal Cave PA has been a popular attraction for visitors since 1873 when Samuel D.F. Koehler bought the land containing the cave and began charging for admission to see the cave. It was the states first “show cave” and the original cost of seeing it was 25 cents. Prior to it being a prime showcase of the beauty of rock formations, the cave had been used for crop storage. And the largest “room” in the cave played host to special events like dances.

Guided Underground Tours of Crystal Cave

Today, the cave is treasured for its beauty and geological significance. Underground guided tours at Cryatal Cave PA are great if you want to thoroughly explore the caves and get to know a bit about the details which make the cave special. The tours last a little less than an hour and include a short film examining both the history of this natural landmark as well as the geology of the cave. The guides are trained to point out the stalactites, stalagmites, and other formations throughout the cave. And no matter the weather, you can be certain that your tour through the cave is going to be between 52 and 58 degrees, depending on your location inside.

Rock Formations Inside Crystal Cave PA

Along with the beautiful crystals that give the cave its name. Crystal Cave PA is home to an array of rock formations, some over 500,000 years old. These include flowstone formations resembling waterfalls and a formation known as the “Upside Down Ice Cream Cone” due to its resemblance to the frozen treat. Other points of interest include a large drop rock that creates a natural bridge and Lookout Point, which provides a view of a large part of the cave.

Miniature Golf and Other Activities at Crystal Cave

Other than cave exploration, Crystal Cave PA has activities that make for an entertaining day out. Get a scoop of ice cream or a Dutch snack from the Ice Cream Parlor or Crystal Cave Cafe. Or play a round of miniature golf on an unusual course on which the obstacles are made with historic relics. And you can discover your own geologic treasure if you sift through some sediment at the sluice.
