Lehigh Valley ZooThere are so many things to do and see in the Lehigh Valley, making it one of the best getaway destinations for travelers seeking all manner of diversions.  The beauty of the natural environment, the quaint charm of the small towns, and the amazing dining and cultural opportunities combine to create the perfect vacation spot.  If you’re coming to our Bethlehem boutique hotel with the family, or you’re just a lover of the natural world, then you should pay a visit to the Lehigh Valley Zoo. The zoo has an impressive array of animal exhibits, including lively and adorable penguins. There is so much fun to be had at this Lehigh Valley gem. When you want to get up close to exotic wildlife during your time at the Sayre Mansion, then head straight to the Lehigh Valley Zoo!

About the Lehigh Valley Zoo

What is now known as the Lehigh Valley Zoo was founded in 1906 as the Lehigh Valleys Trexler Game Preserve. The preserve was vital in saving the North American bison from extinction by creating a space where both the bison and elk could roam freely. Later in 1974 construction began on the zoo, and in 2004 the Lehigh Valley Zoological Society took over management of the zoo as well as the bison, elk, and palominos in the remaining 1,100-acre preserve.

Animals and Exhibits at the Lehigh Valley Zoo

From exotic species from far away places to domestic animals you can see on the farm, you’re sure to find an animal exhibit at the Lehigh Valley Zoo that will capture your attention and imagination.  The African Penguin exhibit at the Jaindl Penguin Pavilion allows visitors to get a glimpse of these intriguing and entertaining birds.  There are even penguin feedings and zookeeper talks at the pavilion twice daily. You can take a peek at the penguins online as well, via the Peguin Cam.

The Lehigh Valley Zoo is also home to a variety of birds of prey including Bald and golden eagles, Peregrine falcons, red-tailed hawks, and several types of owls.  Other popular animals include Dromedary camels, Rocky Mountain Elk, bobcats, river otters, red kangaroos, zebras, and Mexican Gray Wolves. The Los Lobos – Mexican Gray Wolves exhibit is especially interesting as these are the most endangered wolves on the continent.  The Lehigh Valley Zoo’s wolves are part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums wildlife conservation program: Species Survival Plan. As such, the Mexican Gray Wolves at the zoo may be reintroduced into the wild, so they must be allowed to feed as they would in the wild.

Where to Stay When Visiting the Lehigh Valley Zoo

No matter which animal exhibit you’re looking forward to at the Lehigh Valley Zoo, you can look forward to amazing accommodations at the Sayre Mansion.  Our Bethlehem, PA boutique hotel has elegant yet comfortable guest rooms and suites that are the perfect home away from home during a Lehigh Valley getaway.  Guests at the historic mansion also receive a full innkeeper’s breakfast each morning, so your days of adventuring will start out on the right foot.  And our location is central to all of Bethlehem’s attractions and convenient to other parts of the Lehigh Valley.  For a memorable experience, the Sayre Mansion is the place to be.  We’ll see you soon!

The Lehigh Valley Wine Trail is home to nine family-owned vineyards, and has been designated an American Viticultural Area since 2008. These small Lehigh Valley wineries are part of the fastest growing wine region in the state of Pennsylvania, which produces mainly Chambourcin grape wines. These wineries have won the state’s Governor’s Cup 10 times, along with numerous other regional, state, national and international awards for their unique regional wines. With Lehigh Valley’s close proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City, this small wine region is popular among wine connoisseurs from these and other Northeastern urban centers. As a popular refuge for city dwellers Lehigh Valley is also home to many outstanding accommodations, including Sayre Mansion, located in Bethlehem, PA.

Here are some of the top Lehigh Valley wineries.

  1. Amoré

This small family-owned vineyard is committed to uniting friends around great wine, a feeling you’ll get when you visit this vineyard. They planted their first vintages in 2000 and bottled their first wines in 2003. Their beautiful vineyard also grows a small vegetable garden each year and frequently hosts special events in their renovated barn.

  2.  Vynecrest

Vyncrest was established in 1989 to produce premium table wines for which all the grapes are hand-picked from their vineyard, which dates back to 1974. The tasting room here is in a rennovatd barn with a breathtaking view of the vineyard and a welcoming atmosphere comfortable for both first time tasters and wine aficionados. On weekends the Vyneskeller Wine Bar opens with a live piano player and, on the last Sunday of each month, they host Jazz Sundays.

  3. Blue Mountain

This small vineyard began on 5 acres in 1986 and has since expanded to 50 acres and now grow a wide variety of grapes including Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet and Sauvignon. They focus on quality before quantity and are known for their excellent customer relations. Their decks, both indoor and out, sit off the spacious tasting room and overlook their estate grounds including the vineyards and ponds scattered throughout. Picnics are encouraged for a casual trip to the vineyard, but also keep an eye out for their popular events year-round.

  4. Pinnacle Ridge

One of the most awarded Lehigh Valley Wineries, Pinnacle Ridge is known for its dry red and white wines. The vineyard’s renovated Pennsylvania Bank Barn was built in 1851 and is the perfect environment for producing great wines and hosting wine tastings.

  5. Franklin Hill

This small vineyard began in 1981. The owners were driven by the dream of living off the land while simultaneously preserving it for the next generation. They produce a wide variety of delicious hand-made wines, and have a popular vineyard for tours and tasting, which continues to attract people down their dirt road.

If you’re planning a trip to the rolling green hills of Pennsylvania then you definitely want to plan to visit one of these spectacular Lehigh Valley wineries. Staying at the Sayre Mansion will add to your elegant trip through wine country. This bed and breakfast is a favorite in the Lehigh Valley for its historic setting with modern amenities and delicious gourmet food.
