Dorney Park RidesIn Allentown, PA, just twenty minutes from the Sayre Mansion is Dorney Park. This amusement park has plenty of thrills for those adventurous souls looking for some fun. Dorney Park rides are infamous for being thrilling and fun. The park is home to eight roller coasters, several thrill rides and a waterpark called Wildwater Kingdom. Whether you like quick drops, high swings, or fast coasters, these Dorney Park rides will keep you entertained for an afternoon.

12 Great Dorney Park Rides

1. Hydra

One of the signature Dorney Park rides, Hydra is a half-mile of coiling steel roller coaster track. It was also the first floorless roller coaster in Pennsylvania. Its unique twist flips upside down as you exit the station.

2. Possessed

Possessed is a dueling-tower suspended impulse roller coaster. The ride launches both forward and backward with riders dangling beneath 704 feet of track.

3. Steel Force

This roller coaster includes a 205-foot drop, two tunnels, steep banks, turns, and dips. Speeds on Steel Force reach up to 75 miles per hour. Steel Force is thought of as one of the best steel roller coasters in the world.

4. Talon

This inverted roller coaster uses ski-lift style seating. Riders are spun around the outside of the track as their feet dangle in the air. The coaster is also designed to create the illusion of soaring close to the ground for an added thrill.

5. ThunderHawk

ThunderHawk is an old-fashioned wooden roller coaster and was originally named “The Coaster.” The ride is set in a figure-eight pattern and is one of the classic favorites among Dorney Park rides.

6. Stinger

Stinger seats riders face to face and dangles them from the “scorpion’s tail.” The ride lifts passengers up a 138-foot hill before releasing them to race 55 miles per hour through three inversions. The ride goes both forward and backward.

7. Revolution

Revolution is a huge revolving swing made up of an eight-armed ring of seats that face inward. You’ll swing 120 degrees in each direction and reach a nearly inverted position at 65 feet in the air.

8. Meteor

The Meteor seats riders face to face as they are shot around a loop. The ride soars backwards and forwards.

9. Screamin’ Swing

This isn’t your backyard swing. A giant pendulum makes the swing go higher and higher until it flips upside down 60 feet in the air.

10. Thunder Canyon

Thunder Canyon is a river rapids ride measuring 1,640 feet long. Almost a million gallons of water propel you and seven other riders down the course as you take on rapids, waterfalls and geysers.

11. Dominator

Dominator is actually two rides in one. You either choose Launch Upward where you defy gravity at 40 mph up a 200-foot-tall tower, or you can ride Rocket Downward where you’ll descend at a swift 45 mph.

12. Demon Drop

Demon Drop shows riders what it would be like if they were suspended from the top of a 10-story building. It’s an elevator style ride dangles passengers before unexpectedly dropping them 60 feet. The free fall lasts about two seconds and then riders experience the deceleration of g-forces as they enter a pull-out curve in a lying down position.

Where to Stay When Visiting Dorney Park

When you’re deciding on which of these Dorney Park rides to embark on, be sure to book your stay at the Sayre Mansion. Pennsylvania Dutch Country

Pennsylvania Dutch Country is a beautiful part of our state inhabited, centers on the cities of Allentown, Hershey, Lancaster, Reading, and York in the southeastern part of the state.  As the name suggests, this part of the state is inhabited by the Pennsylvania Dutch, a cultural group originally formed by early immigrants and their descendants. Sometimes, simply referred to Amish Country, Pennsylvania Dutch Country is also home to groups of other religions such as Mennonite, River Brethren, Moravian, and more. The Amish are simply the most well known out of these religions. During a day trip to Pennsylvania Dutch Country, you’ll experience a variety of people, sights, and attractions. Horses and carriages or buggies will make appearances on the same roads as cars, there will be markets full of handmade food and goods, and plenty of other ways to experience this unique culture.

5 Things to Do on a Day Trip to Pennsylvania Dutch Country

1.Take an Amish VIP (Visit-In-Person) Tour

This exclusive tour takes a limited number of people to three Amish properties to get a clearer understanding of the Amish culture and way of life. The Amish Experience runs these tours of no more than 14 people. Guests will stop at an Amish Farm, see the “Cottage Industries” the Amish have gotten into, and the day will end with a visit with an Amish family.

2.Visit Central Market

Central Market is a must see when in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. The market dates back to 1742 and the building was constructed in 1889. It’s the oldest continually operating farmers’ market in the country. Find fresh flowers, baked good, produce, meat, and more at this Lancaster gem.

3.Head to Dutch Haven for Shoo-Fly Pie

A famous culinary delight, Shoo-Fly Pie is really best from Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Dutch haven sells handmade pies that make a great souvenir from your time in Pennsylvania Dutch Country.

Bethlehem Steel ToursBethlehem, PA is a city with a rich history. From the indigenous people who made their home here to the Moravians who settled here later, you can find stories about the past all over town. Industry became an important factor in the formation of Bethlehem as we know it today.  A big part of our city’s history is the Bethlehem Steel Corporation.  Bethlehem Steel was the backbone of the city until its decline, and its legacy lives on in many ways. To get more familiar with the company and the influence it’s had on the city and its people, then we suggest taking on of the Bethlehem Steel tours that are now offered. With these walking tours, you’ll get a bit of an education and you might just see the Christmas City in a different light.

About Bethlehem Steel

Founded in 1857, Bethlehem Steel was once the second-largest steel producer and largest shipbuilder in the United States. Together with the subsidiary company, Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Bethlehem Steel was a powerful example of the American industrial manufacturing sector. During World War I and World War II, Bethlehem Steel made armor plate and large-caliber guns for the US military. The company also made the steel sections of the Golden Gate Bridge. Later, in the 1980s and 1990s production decline and the steel plant closed and officially became defunct in 2003. Today the campus of the plant is home to the SteelStacks and the Sands Bethlehem Casino.

Bethlehem Steel Tours

There are two different walking Bethlehem Steel tours offered and each will let you get familiar with the history of Bethlehem and Bethlehem Steel’s place in that history.

Steelwalkers Walking Tours

Steelwalkers Walking Tours will put you in the shoes of a steelworker to experience what an average day working for Bethlehem Steel might be like. You’ll find out about the excitement and danger of the job, learn how the blast furnaces worked and hear some fascinating stories that you won’t hear elsewhere. These Bethlehem Steel tours also include question and answer sessions with an experienced steelworker.

The Rise and Fall of Bethlehem Steel Walking Tour

On the Rise and Fall of Bethlehem Steel Walking Tour, a trained guide will make you more familiar with the different parts of the plant. You’ll also get to learn about the blast furnaces why the steelworkers needed brass checks to enter the gate each morning.

Burnside PlantationBethlehem, Pennsylvania is a place rich in history and heritage and many of the places that were integral to the city’s formation still exist today.  At the Sayre Mansion, we encourage guests to explore our city and get to know a little bit of its past during their stay with us. Not only is going back in time enlightening, but it’s fun as well! One place we like to suggest guests visit is Burnside Plantation. Known as Bethlehem’s Farm in the City, Burnside Plantation has plenty of historic charm and hosts exciting events and activities throughout the year.

Things to See at Burnside Plantation

There are several sites of interest at Burnside Plantation. The original house, known as Little Cot, was constructed in 1748. The home is a two story residence built with rubble stone and brick arches. The slope of the back roof gives the building a saltbox appearance. The house was later expanded in 1810 with the addition of rooms and the roof was raised to accommodate a granary. The log barn, stable, and smokehouse that originally accompanied the farmhouse are no longer present. However, the property also boasts a summer kitchen, wagon shed, and corncrib, which were added in the 1820s. Another thing you need to make sure you see while at Burnside Plantation is one of the nation’s only functional high horsepower wheel. A new building, the Haas Barn, was erected in 2001 and houses an activity center.

Activities and Events at Burnside Plantation

Each year Burnside Plantation plays host to a number of special events and activities. There are educational programs for youth at the Back to Your Roots Activity Center. There are also major events that take place at the plantation each year. Each July locals and visitors alike look forward to the Blueberry Festival, known as The Sweetest Festival of the Summer. Enjoy amazing blueberry confections like pies, strudel, coffee cake, and blueberry swirled vanilla ice cream at the Historic Bethlehem Desert Tent. Attendees can also tour the property and gardens, see craft vendors and exhibits, or partake in the pie eating contest! This year’s festival takes place July 18th and 19th. Then, in September yet another great event happens at the plantation.  The Burnside Sale & Apple Days gives patrons the opportunity to shop for locally made goods, vintage finds, and rare gifts.  There is also an impressive array of apple treats including cider, pies, and other baked goods. Or enjoy fresh produce, wagon rides, games, crafts, and more!

Accommodations Near Burnside Plantation

When you plan your visit to Burnside Plantation, be sure to book your stay at our Bethlehem boutique hotel.  The Sayre Mansion is located in the heart of Bethlehem, just minutes away from Burnside Plantation and all of the other great attractions our fair city has to offer. The hotel is set in a historic 1858 mansion, so you can experience the rich history of our area firsthand even when you’re not out exploring the sites. Our timelessly elegant guest rooms and suites give a nod to the mansion’s place in Bethlehem’s history while still providing modern comforts for guests. Another big event held at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome is the World Series of Bicycling. This huge event has been taking place in the Lehigh Valley for the past 39 summers. The event draws talented local and international cyclists to the velodrome to compete.  So far, 15 different countries have been represented and 12 Olympians have participated!

Along with team racing and special events, there are classes to train everyone from beginners to intermediate cyclists about track cycling. Try the Track is a one day clinic that will teach you what you need to know to cycle at the Velodrome.

Musikfest LineupEach summer, the people of Bethlehem look forward to a huge music festival that brings both big name and independent acts to multiple stages throughout the city.   Musikfest is the event of the year on some people’s calendars, and for good reason.  The festival gives attendees the chance to see world famous acts as well as independent and local musicians, all in beautiful downtown Bethlehem. Past lineups have included Sheryl Crow, Keith Urban, Avett Brothers, Weezer, Alan Jackson, Steely Dan and many more! The Musikfest lineup this year promises to be just as memorable as those of years past.

About Musikfest

Musikfest started in 1984 and was founded by ArtsQuest. While the first festival had 295 performances on six stages with 180,000 people in attendance, the event has grown quite a bit.  Today there are more than 500 shows on 14 stages throughout Bethlehem, taking place over the coast of 10 days. Now attendance is upwards of 900,000 people!

Musikfest Events

The center of Musikfest is of course, music! There are 14 stages set up throughout Bethlehem during Musikfest, so you can see a favorite musician or find a new one! Musikfest is also a great place to enjoy great food from local vendors, browse the wares of local artisans, and just enjoy the city of Bethlehem in the summer!

Throughout the year, events are held at Musikfest Cafe on the SteelStacks Campus. Performers this year include Joan Osbourne, George Winston, The StepCrew, Tom Paxton, The Blues Brotherhood, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Spyro Gyra, David Liebman, Herman’s Hermits feturing Peter Noone, Dr. John & the Nite Trippers, Robert Cray Band, Sonny Landreth, Madeleine Peyroux Trio, David Crosby, Taylor Dane, Fastball & the Rembrandts, Nick Di Paolo, and The Yardbirds.

Ticketed Musikfest Lineup

In addition to Musikfest Cafe and the other events throughout the festival, there are several performances with big name performers that aren’t to be missed! This year attendees can get tickets to see Culture Club, Reba, ZZ Top, Darius Rucker, and Alice in Chains.

ArtsquestThe city of Bethlehem, PA has so much going on throughout the year, that you’ll never run out of new activities to try or fun places to explore.  Our city is lucky to have a strong local creative culture as well a strong feeling of community that we’re glad to share with visitors. Part of that is because of enriching places like ArtsQuest at the SteelStacks campus here in Bethlehem. ArtsQuest is dedicated to providing our community (and those who are temporary community members) with access to the arts in a number of forms. This multifaceted organization is full of exciting educational opportunities, activities, and events.

About ArtsQuest

ArtsQuest is part of the SteelStacks campus in downtown Bethlehem.  What used to be the home of Bethlehem Steel has become a hub for creativity and cultural growth in our city. Along with ArtsQuest, SteelStacks is home to the Banana Factory, the Levitt Pavilion, and Christmas City (seasonally). The mission of ArtsQuest is to provide the Bethlehem community with “access to exceptional artistic, cultural, and educational experiences promoting individual and community creativity, enlightenment and fulfillment,” as well as to “provide access to art, culture, and educational programs for the diverse residents of the Lehigh Valley and others who seek access.” This is achieved in a multitude of ways, including business partnerships, special events, and making arts and culture an important part of the local economy.

Education at ArtsQuest

Education is a big part of the ArtsQuest mission.  Education at ArtsQuest includes programs for students (both adults and children), community programs, and programs for instructors. These programs take the form of workshops, classes, performances and more. The programs accommodate those of all ages and abilities.

Events at ArtsQuest

Along with the artistic and educational aspects of ArtsQuest, there are also community and public events hosted at the space periodically.  Here are a few upcoming events to look forward to if you’re planning a visit sometimes soon.
