Bogert’s Bridge

Bogert’s Bridge was built in 1841 and is one of the oldest in the region. It is owned by the city of Allentown. The bridge has a span of 145 feet and is open to pedestrian traffic only.

Manasses Guth Bridge

Manasses Guth Bridge crosses over the meandering Jordan Creek, as do four other bridges on the Lehigh Valley Covered Bridge Tour. The bridge was originally build in 1858 and then rebuilt after a fire in 1882. It was build with the Burr arch truss design and has a span of 108 feet.

Wehr’s Covered Bridge

Another bridge that crosses Jordan Creek, Wehr’s Covered Bridge is located at the western end of Covered Bridge Park. It was originally known as Sieger’s Covered Bridge before being officially named Wehr’s Covered Bridge. The bridge was built in 1841 and has a span of 128 feet.

Rex’s Covered Bridge

Rex’s Covered Bridge is the third bridge that spans the Jordan Creek. The bridge has a Burr arch truss design and the high arches can be seen through side openings. The bridge was built in 1858 and spans 116 feet.

Geiger’s Covered Bridge

Located on the eastern side of the Trexler-Lehigh County Game Preserve, Geiger’s Covered Bridge was built with Burr arches and has a floor of lengthwise and crosswise planking. The bridge was built in 1860 and spans 112 feet.

Schlicher’s Covered Bridge

Sometimes called the “deer pen bridge” since it is surrounded by the Trexler-Leigh County Game Preserve, this bridge was built in 1882 before the preserve’s 1906 establishment. The preserve was established to protect and raise bison, elk, and deer, which can often be seen grazing nearby. The Burr Truss design was used in the bridges construction. The bridge spans 108 feet.

Where is Allentown PAAllentown is known for many things, including its award-winning park system, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs baseball team, and its rich Pennsylvania Dutch history. But just where is Allentown, PA and why should you visit? We have a few suggestions!

Where is Allentown, PA?

First things first. Allentown is located about 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia and 90 miles west of New York City, making Allentown a popular destination among business and leisure travelers. The Lehigh Valley International Airport is about three miles northeast of Allentown, which offers direct service from Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago-O’Hare, Charlotte, Philadelphia, and several cities in Florida.

Allentown is part of the Lehigh Valley, named for the Lehigh River that runs through the area. The Lehigh Valley is comprised of Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton. Allentown is the largest city in the Lehigh Valley and the third largest city in Pennsylvania. This Pennsylvania-New Jersey metropolitan area is growing quickly. With this growth, there are plenty of things to do for every interest and age group, yet it’s still small enough to navigate easily.

A Few of Our Favorite Things to Do and See in Allentown

Like much of the Lehigh Valley, Allentown was once an active manufacturing center but it now offers an array of cultural attractions, museums, entertainment and much more. Here are a few of our favorite things to do and see and Allentown.

Allentown Art Museum

The Allentown Art Museum offers tremendous variety and quality in its exhibitions, educational programs and public events. The museum serves more than 100,000 visitors each year. Its collection of more than 17,000 works of art offers the opportunity to experience nearly 2,000 years of cultural heritage in an accessible, visitor-friendly environment.

Allentown Fair

Held in late August/early September each year, the Allentown Fair is a fun and educational experience for all ages. The fair was first held in 1852 and continues to have deep roots in the agricultural traditions that it began with.

Allentown Parks

Allentown is home to an award-winning park system that includes West Park. This beautiful park offers grassy areas, trails, a fountain and a band shell where you can listen to different bands during the Summer Concert Series.

Allentown Fairgrounds Farmers Market

The Farmers Market is a great place to get local produce and handcrafted goods. Located on the Allentown Fairgrounds, the market features more than 65 merchants. You’ll be sure to find just what you are looking for, whether it’s baked goods, fresh flowers, seafood or produce.

Lehigh Valley IronPigs

Allentown is also home to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the region’s popular minor league baseball team and the Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. Named for the steel industry’s prominent place in the region’s history, the team was founded in 1993. The name IronPigs comes from the term “pig iron” which was part of the process of steel production. Check out the IronPigs’ schedule and plan to take in a game at Coca-Cola Park while you’re visiting.

If you’re planning a trip to the area, rest assured you’ll find many great things to do in Allentown. Consider staying nearby in Bethlehem, PA at Sayre Mansion, a quaint bed and breakfast known for its outstanding hospitality, breakfast and charm.
