What’s a Velodrome?

If you’re not a cycling aficionado, then you might be thinking, “what’s a velodrome?” Velodrome is simply a term for track cycling arenas.  These venues usually have steeply banked oval tracks surrounded by stadium seating. The oval consists of two 180-degree circular bends connected by two straights.  Velodromes can be indoor or outdoors and typically have lines to mark lanes for races. Track cycling uses fixed-gear bicycles that don’t have a freewheel or brakes. Track cycling races can take on many different formats in both spring and endurance categories. Events may also be either team or individual events.
