The History of Burnside Plantation

In 1748, James Burnside purchased a 500-acre tract of land in what is now known as Old Bethlehem, PA. Three years later, he sold 200 of those acres to a group of Moravians. Fast forward to 1986, when Lehigh County purchased the plantation with the goal of restoring it and turning it into a living history resource.

Today, visitors to Burnside Plantation can tour the historic buildings, including the original house called the Little Cot. This two-story residence was built with rubble stone and brick arches with a sloped back roof giving the building a saltbox appearance. The house was later expanded in 1810 with the addition of rooms and the roof was raised to accommodate a granary. The log barn, stable, and smokehouse that originally accompanied the farmhouse are no longer present. However, the property also boasts a summer kitchen, wagon shed, and corncrib, all of which were added in the 1820s. Another thing you need to make sure you see while at Burnside Plantation is one of the nation’s only functional high horsepower wheel. A new building, the Haas Barn, was erected in 2001 and houses an activity center.
