Visit Lost River Caverns in PA

The first thing any visitor to Lost River Caverns should do is take a walking tour. During this guided walk, you will travel through 1,200 feet of paved walkways underground. The tour lasts about 40 minutes. Since the cavern stays a steady 52-degrees, you should bring a light jacket with you for your tour.

After you’ve explored the system, stop by the Lake River Caverns gift shop. Inside, you’ll find a stunning selection of gems, minerals, and crystals, along with custom-made jewelry and supplies to create your own pieces. This is a great place to pick up a one-of-a-kind souvenir for your loved ones at home!

Be sure to visit The Gilman Museum, which houses artifacts that have been collected by the Gilman family for three generations. Inside, you’ll find minerals, fossils, gemstones, interesting antiques, and even a collection of 17th-century weapons.

Other great attractions at the Caverns include a scenic hiking trail and a functional recreation of a 19th-century mining operation called The Gem Mill. This is especially fun for kids, as they’ll get to uncover their own gemstones in a water-operated sluice.

Lost River Caverns vs. Crystal Cave

Another great underground system in the area is found at Crystal Cave, PA! Often, visitors to the area are unsure of the difference between the two sites. Crystal Cave is only open from the beginning of March to the end of November and features amazing stone sculptures. It was also Pennsylvania’s first “show cave,” and is great spot to purchase some ice cream or Pennsylvania Dutch treats. Crystal Cave is 40 minutes away from Sayre Mansion. It’s a little further away than Lost River Caverns.
