Christkindlmarkt in Bethlehem, PA
The History of Christkindlmarkts
So what exactly is the deal with this Christmas market in Bethlehem, PA? And why is the name so impossible to pronounce? The word “christkindlmarkt” is the German term for “Christmas market” or “Christmas fair.” This tradition of holiday fairs dates back to the late Middle Ages. It is held today in honor of the original Moravian settlers who established themselves in Lehigh Valley and christened this area “Bethlehem.” These settlers believed that men and women should be given the same education, all people should work for a common goal to better the community and did not allow prejudice based on race, gender, or ethnicity. What better time than the Christmas season to remember and celebrate our town’s origins?
